Free Soccer Training Drills: Coaching Young Players

Coaching young players, through free soccer training drills is very much different than coaching adults. The age factor plays a crucial role and it is very important for you to have everything planned, keeping in view the specific age group of the players that you have to coach.

A new coach finds it very difficult in the beginning to handle the bunch of wild kids. However, if you keep in mind a few things, things will become much easier for you. To begin with, the first thing that you have to work upon is to teach your players the life skills, which include discipline, motivation, and other such things.

Some coaches do the mistake by starting their coaching sessions right away with various soccer drills and practice games. Here, you must note that as long as your players are undisciplined and unmotivated, you will not be able to achieve optimum results from your efforts.

Before you start having your players practice the free soccer training drills, make sure that you have won their confidence and respect. Once you are able to achieve a comfort level with the players, it will be much easier for you to handle them.

Things To Do At An Under 7 Soccer Training: Receiving And Trapping The Ball

There are a lot of things to do at an under 7 soccer training session. You have to teach the young players regarding the various aspects of the game of soccer, with an objective to turn these players into a match-winning team.


When you're coaching soccer drills on how to control the ball , there are two things that you need to teach your players about – trapping the ball and receiving the ball.


While receiving the ball, the players have to redirect the ball into space, in order to create opportunity for them to dribble, shoot, pass or kick the ball with lots of movement – without standing still.


On the other hand, trapping the ball is an activity, where the players try to stop the ball right at their feet. Among the various things to do at less than 7 soccer training, it is important for the coach to train their players regarding these two aspects of controlling the ball.


Both need ultimate ball controlling soccer skills. Furthermore, you also have to teach your players about the specific situations, whether, the players should try to receive the ball or trap the ball.

Free Soccer Training Drills - How To Select

There are a large variety of free soccer training drills available, but how do you select the right ones?

You probably already have a good idea of the skills you want to develop and teach your players, and you would want to select the most effective drills, those that will enable your players to improve their individual skills and play with more confidence.

You have to be careful in choosing the soccer drills that are neither too difficult nor too simple.

Tips On Selecting The Right Soccer Drills

Here are some useful tips that will help you as a soccer coach, choose the right kind of soccer traning drills for your players:
  1. If it takes more than half a minute to explain the drill... it can tough for the players to understand it, depending on the age of the players.
  2. If you plan to include all the players in a soccer conditioning drill or practice game, you won’t need to do much explaining.
  3. The soccer practice drills you choose, must be structured in such a way, as to get the players who need improvement work harder to get better. Do not select a practice where the weak players get ‘out’ of the game.
  4. With young players, do not pick soccer exercises where they have to hang around waiting or in line.
  5. One way to minimize time being wasted is to select various drills that need the same arrangement.
