Teaching Soccer To Kids

Teaching soccer to kids can be very rewarding if you know how to motivate them and keep training sessions fun and interesting. But there are other important elements to consider:

  • Kids Training Is Not An Academic School

When it comes to teach how to soccer, every soccer coach should understand that coaching soccer is different from the way classes in academic schools are held. Kids come for the training session with an intention to have fun and play.

If coaches make the game look serious, the kids will not enjoy it and this may result in various disciplinary issues. If you want the kids to have interest in the game following all the disciplines, you must make training fun and engaging.

STEP 1: Do not be too rigid, but do not be too light as well.

STEP 2: Teach everything through practice and interactive games and drills for soccer, and not through the long boring lectures (they are important, but you must keep it short and simple.)

STEP 3: The majority of the training session must be in the form of a keep-away game or cone drills.

STEP 4: Explain the drills briefly, and then let them run around and play.

In general, make training sessions interactive, fun and engaging. You will have to deal with less disciplinary issues. Thus, teaching soccer to kids can be easy to deal with if you take care of the little things as discussed above.

Kids Soccer Drills - Teaching Dribbling & Shooting

Teaching kids soccer drills may be quite challenging. Today I'll share with you a few kids soccer training tips.

  • Teaching Kids - Dribbling And Shooting

For this kids soccer drill, line up the kids on a single goal line. Be aware that you'll need a large number of balls. Have all the balls scattered over the soccer field. Now, as you say, “GO”, the kids have to move towards these balls, pick up the same, and put it into the goal on the opposite side. This is an effective soccer drill that can help the kids improve their dribbling and shooting skills.

  • One Touch Shooting

Usually kids love this soccer practice game. In this soccer technique, the coach should divide the team in two lines, and have them stand in a queue at not less than forty feet from the goal post. Place the goalkeeper on the goalpost.

You should use one goalkeeper in each session (if your team has more than one goalkeeper). When you repeat the drill, you should change the goalkeeper, giving the other goalkeeper an opportunity to practice the same. Your position will be somewhere between the two queues of the players.

Now, you should toss the ball to one of the queues of the players and instruct them to shoot or pass the ball with just one touch. When any player shoots the ball off to the goalkeeper, the goalkeeper will pass the ball back to you.

Test these kids soccer drills and send me some feedback!

Teaching Soccer Coaching Tactics Properly

There are several factors that a coach must take into careful consideration while teaching soccer coaching tactics, especially while training young players.

  • Begin With Simple Soccer Tactics

Always start with teaching the players about the simple soccer techniques. Adapt the specific soccer training drills that the players can perform with the skills they possess. Once you start seeing the improvements, you should offer them more advanced tactics.

  • Always Appropriate To The Players' Age

This is something that many soccer coaches overlook and they start teaching the same tactics to everybody irrespective of their ages. This is something that can bring adverse effect to your team’s performance. Therefore, make sure that you teach them the basic soccer tactics that are appropriate to the players' age and match.

  • Communication: Simple Language

The language and the way in which you give instructions to the players must be simple, direct, and unambiguous.

  • Do Not Complicate - Use Brief Instructions

True that you need to make your descriptions easy to understand, but it does not mean that you should tell them everything in such detail that it should eat up most of your training time. It is equally important for you to keep in mind the time factor and be as brief as possible.

However, you should not compromise on clarity just because you need to brief in your instructions. It is not at all a good idea to use long lectures in the soccer training session. Furthermore, many coaches use sarcasm in their instructions.

Always remember that is not good for the health of the game and for your team’s performance. Therefore, make sure that you are not using any sarcasm that could be misinterpreted. It is better to avoid jargon as well. You should try your best to speak carefully and be specific and brief.

Remember that seeing is better than hearing and doing is better than seeing. Therefore, when it comes to teaching soccer, an expert coach should introduce his topic, show it, and get the players doing it quickly.
